Freshwater Pearl Collection
Welcome to
The House of Pearls
China's cultured pearl farmers are the overwhelming  major
producers of freshwater pearls in the world today. The sizes
of freshwater pearls are comparable to akoya cultured
pearls but vary greatly in color. Some Chinese pearl farmers
produce dozens of different colors in sizes that range from
2mm to 13mm, though the larger sizes are extremely rare.
Cultured in mussels belonging to the Unionidae family they
include
H. cumingi ("triangle shell") and C. plicata
("wrinkle or river shell"). In the USA, the chief pearl
producing mussel is the "washboard" -
M. nervosa. Just a
small fraction of the total number of cultured freshwater
pearls are cultured in the USA.
